It’s funny how a spirit, or spirits, dead or alive, can still focus on what there may be to celebrate whether in death or life.
Each week Mondays Finish the Story posts a pic and an opening line to write a 150 word story about.
The Celebration at Miners Hill
The only residents remaining in the small town of Miners Hill are spirits. But no one really cares. Certainly not the residents of the town. And, especially today.
This is a special day for the residents. They celebrate who they were. The operative word being were. Because they are no longer. Ever since the mine collapsed; exploded actually, and the entire town went up in smoke.
But no one focuses on that dark episode today, or on any other day, in this town. They only focus on celebrating and honoring the extraordinary residents of this town.
So, come on. Join us in the fetivities. Time to celebrate and commemorate.
It’s Miners Hill Memorial Day.

A lovely tale of a celebration of lost lives…Nicely done Randy. One minor correction, if I may…Last paragraph, the word festivities…Thank you for writing again for the challenge and I hope that you come back for the next one too! Be well… ^..^
i could make a fetish out of fetivities, but better to make it a festivity.. thanks, Randy
A very spectral celebration! I enjoyed your story and the “eerie” take to the prompt.
eerie it is…
Heh heh, it was a great story!
Very topical take on this prompt Randy…well done.
seemed very timely, yes.
Maybe that’s Writer’s village?
No, sorry, Writers village didn’t have an exploding mine; it imploded on Kool-aid – that’s the spirit, as us spirits say, in the Writers Village.
A memorial day celebrated by the actual people it’s remembering. Now that would be something to see!
Rod Serling would love the concept
A great take on the prompt. I love that they celebrate the lives they led without focussing on the tragedy of their deaths. Well done. 🙂
the positive is always the side to focus on – watch the negative to learn from it, but celebrate the positive
Great story – such a tragedy that happened to that community.
yes – there are towns like these figuratively throughout the US.
I knew a town in PA whose mine has been on fire for, I guess, about 50 years now. I think Broadway just made a musical (sadly ironical) about it. Randy
Such an uplifting story within such a sad one, but nice to know they are content enough with their existence… or lack thereof, to celebrate their fate. Nicely done….
Thanks. Yes, it is nice that one might celebrate one’s own non-existence…
Randy
I can just see them getting into the spirit of the thing. Pun intended. I don’t ususally do puns, but I couldn’t resist with this one. Well done, Randy. 😀 — Suzanne
Thank you, on a spiritual basis, of course.
