A petite jaunt into existentialism: a small hand salute to Sartre, the French, and living…
Each week Rochelle Wisoff-Fields posts a pic to write a 100 word story about.
This week it’s: an existential thing.

Making Life Count
Why are you marking these grates?
I am keeping count.
Of what?
The grates. Why do you ask?
Mere curiosity. Why do you count?
What else would I do?
Something substantial. Or, maybe just live life to its fullest.
Who then will mark the grates?
I am certain I do not know. But, what will you do when you’re done?
I haven’t considered that. I guess I will number the next thing. Do you think the number of grates is limited?
For sure.
Is that why you say live life to its fullest?
Precisely. Everything is limited.
Then I prefer to count.

Interesting. I don’t think I know enough about Sartre to have this make sense to me. Enlightenment?
Existentialism.
I think therefore I am.
His seeking purpose in something outside himself … might work for a while until he runs out of ideas I think. Love the dialogue and message.
Thank you.
Anything and everything might work for a while – until it runs out. Whether living life to its fullest, or just marking time or counting grates.
Randy
I feel an OCD coming on.
Good piece.
I’d write a response but I have to wash my hands – a lot.
😉
Randy
LOL
Just leave him to it, I say. He seems happy enough in his numbering 🙂
Live and let live, eh?
Randy
Yup 🙂
Numbering things seems to be essential to him, so who says that he is not living life to its fullest-the way he sees it. Interesting story (and I don’t know much about Sartre either).
I like the way you philosophize about this.
I think therefore I could be,or may not be, or if I did not think I could be a mustache.
This last sentence is unfair if you don’t understand or know Sartre. And of course I don’t know either (just teasing here).
Randy
😀 To be or not to be…
or as Frank Sinatra said – too bee do bee doo 😉
😀
Who has the right to say someone’s not living their life to the fullest. We all find happiness in different places.
There you go.
That’s the attitude!

Yes I’m sure there is more thing to count. If nothing else the grates can probably be recounted.
I like how you think –
therefore you are.
😉

he better talk to his lawyer. marking grates could be considered vandalism in some cities. but come to think of it, it’s a skill that would come handy when he marks his days in prison. 🙂
day l

I mark therefore I am
😉
Food for thought. I’m sure he’ll never run out of grates to count. That’s comforting.
My thought to begin with.
everyone has written about the shoes, you i guess are the only one who has emphasized the grate. lovely observation
what shoes?
You’re kidding me. Now I’ll have to go back and renumber everything!!!!!!!!
Dear Randy,
This piece is really grate. It’s his life if he wants to be accountable. I comment, therefore I was here. E50.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Love it.

If he’s reached E48 already he’d better have the next thing in view.
😉
Not everyone can, or cares to, see that far ahead.
As most everyone has already said. Who has the right to determine if he is or is not living life to his fullest!
Everyone has the right. It doesn’t make them right. Right?
It’s just like rectums.
Everyone has one. The difference is having one and being one.
I’m not sure how this applies to anything. i just liked the concept and thought I’d try it out here. Thanks for your comment. Bet you wished I hadn’t commented back. Eh?
Randy
You are a hoot. And I happen to agree.
😉
Internal dialog? Interesting. I wonder if counting a thing makes it real when numbers are mere abstraction? Too out there??? 😉
not at all – but a rose by any other number would smell as feet.
Randy 😉
🙂
Perfect!

That kind of, sort of, makes sense, Randy. I guess. Well done. 🙂 — Suzanne
Thanks. I kind of, sort of, understand. And now back to my count…;-) Randy
Cute! Whatever you are called to do… Do it well!
