On My 86 Year Old Mother’s Hospitalization
I call to cheer her up.
“I can’t talk now,” she hoarsely whispers into the line.
“I’m about to have a procedure done.”
“Follow the procedure,” I hoarsely whisper back into the phone
(Small ironies are not cards inside my mother’s deck).
She says quickly, “I got to go now.”
“I love you.” I say back,
a disconnected reassurance,
her having hurriedly hung up the phone,
fearing being late….
