Although I wrote the story about being hard wired, as an afterthought my guess is that kids nowadays would opt to network, so cutting the wire would not be a problem for them…
Each week Rochelle Wisoff-Fields posts a pic to write a 100 word story about.
This week is not-quite-fiction-or-humor: We’re all connected to something and without that connection, we’re nothing.
Hard Wired for Life
No one can exist without the wire, Joseph, Grandpa Herb said.
Almost all die from the fall. None who survive can stand on their own. The wire holds us up straight, grandson. Just enjoy the ride. We’re only here for a short time. Make the best of it.
Herb watched to see if his grandson would heed his words or if the urge for self-discovery would cause him to cut his own wire.
Joseph sensed a truth which he did not want to risk, not now.
Herb smiled. There would be more tests to come raising a grandson in this ride called life.

Good write. I like your take on the prompt.
Lily
Thank you. Are you riding?
Randy
Nice! I like the metaphor for life and growing up
what’s a meta for?
is it similar to what a beta’s for?
By the way, what’s a beta for?
I was at a race track recently and I’a bet’a four on the sixth.
Am I’a gettin’ closer?
Randy
That’s really odds.
People raised by grandparents are different from the rest of us.
Good piece.
Nice metaphor for life and the ties which bind.
Blessed be the tie that binds…
Wonderfully constructed allegory.
Thank you but I don’t have any constructive allergies.
Except a few in the spring, but that’s a ways away.
Randy
I think going wireless doesn’t work for life… Great take
Bjorn. I like your response . Made me laugh. Thanks. Randy
Love the metaphor. Nicely done!
Thank you.
There’s a raw sweetness here, Randy, that I really like. Your dialogue is real and hits home. Very nice!
Thanks. I like hitting home. I like going home. I guess you could just say I’m a homey.
Randy
Here’s a wise old man.
who said he’s old, wise guy!
Somehow this reminds me of puppets on a string. Interesting story.
Dear Randy,
Besides the obvious thread of wise grandpa and responsive grandson, you’ve given us a whole backstory in a few words about Herb raising his grandson. Well done.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thanks – and congrats to you in your new lifestyle.
Randy
I enjoyed your take, Randy. We are connected somehow. I like grandpa’s advice about enjoying the ride because it’s a short one! Good advice for all of us.
Yes, it is.
Joseph is looking for a soft wire, perhaps a cotton rope, or perhaps a dainty piece of yarn. Look! He knitting Grandpa a sweater.
Grandpa a wise man. I’m glad the grandson understood. Well done, Randy. 🙂 — Suzanne
Thank you.
I’m certain he will cut the wire. We all do, eventually.
I did. But then I spent the rest of my life trying to reconnect.
